English in Poems and Songs
is the first of three courses for Secondary IV English Language Arts. The learning situations encourage the learners to develop an understanding and ability to apply the codes and conventions used in poetry and song. The course addresses the competencies: uses language/talk to communicate and to learn (C1) and reads and listens to written, spoken and media texts (C2). By the end of the course learners will be able to analyse and discuss poems and songs and make an oral presentation of a poem.

Duration: 25 hours (1 unit)

The learning guide contains three learning situations and two scored activities (formative evaluation situations).

  • Learners identify poems and songs that reach them, they learn to recognize and respond to sensory images, patterns of rhythm and rhyme, and identify elements to consider in a poetry reading.
  • Learners record a poem and an oral response to a poem.
  • Learners learn a procedure to follow in understanding a poem, write responses to poems, and reflect on how poetry and song use similar techniques to deliver a message.
  • Learners learn to discuss and analyse poetry and songs and to consider the creative process of artists.
  • Learners will also examine the imagery and poetic devices used in poems and songs and look at the content and meaning in poems and songs.
