English to Inform is the third of three courses for Secondary IV English Language Arts. The learners develop an ability to apply the codes and conventions of news stories, documentaries, and feature stories. The course addresses the three competencies: Uses language/talk to communicate and to learn (C1), reads and listens to written, spoken and media texts (C2) and produces texts for personal and social purposes (C3). By the end of the course learners will be able to discuss and analyse news reports, feature stories, and objective and persuasive documentaries.

Duration: 75 hours (3 units)

Content:

The learning guide contains nine learning situations and three scored activities (formative evaluation situations).

• Learning situation 1 through 3: Learners acquire the skills and competencies to deliver an oral news report. They learn to recognize the communication conventions of news reports, evaluate the trustworthiness of news, and learn about being a citizen journalist.
• Learning situation 4 through 6: Learners analyse and discuss documentaries, learn to present information in a logical manner, and make a recommendation of a documentary for a film festival.
• Learning situation 7 through 9: Learners learn the structure and conventions of feature articles, they learn to compare feature articles with news reports, and write their own feature article.

Evaluation:

In accordance with the end of course assessment procedures used by the institution where the adult is registered. In conformity with the applicable definition of domain for the field.
