English and the World of Story is the second of three courses for Secondary IV English Language Arts. The learning situations encourage learners to develop an understanding and an ability to apply the codes and conventions used in story and film. The course addresses the competencies: reads and listens to written, spoken and media texts (C2) and Produces texts for personal and social purposes (C3). By the end of the course learners will be able to write a film review, discuss and analyse a novella and its film adaptation, and produce a comparison/contrast essay.

Duration: 50 hours (2 units)

Content:

The learning guide contains six learning situations and three scored activities (formative evaluation situations).

• Learning situation 1: Learners explore the codes and conventions of stories and examine the role of stories in their own lives.
• Learning situation 2: Learners learn the techniques, codes, and conventions of film.
• Learning situation 3: Learners learn to discuss and analyse a short story, learn how characters in stories are developed, and learn about literary criticism.
• Learning situation 4: Learners learn how stories develop and transform as they are adapted from books and other media into films.
• Learning situation 5: Learners learn to compare a story and its film adaptation in essay form.
• Learning situation 6: Learners come to understand the value of film critiques in broadening one’s awareness of film, and they learn how to write a film critique.
